He received M.D. (1979), Ph.D. (1985) from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan; National License of Physician and Surgeon, Japan (1979).
He was Professor and Chairperson, Departments of Molecular Cell Physiology, Bio-Ionomics, and Respiratory Medicine, Dean for Student Affairs, and Director of Library and Center for Information & Multimedia Studies, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan. He was also an Associate Professor (Principal Investigator and Laboratory Head), Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute, and Division of Respiratory Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He also served as an Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and a Research Associate, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Galveston, Texas, USA. He was an Assistant Professor, Department of Physiology, Shiga University of Medical Science, Otsu, Japan just after graduation from Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and was engaged in investigation on molecular mechanisms until leaving to USA.

(Medical Research Council of Canada) and Research Award from National Kidney Foundation (USA).
